How To Healthily Indulge In a Retail Therapy Session According To a Fashion Expert

The Prelude

When retail therapy is mentioned it usually has a negative connotation surrounding the phrase. But what if I told you that you can indulge in a healthy retail therapy session. That buying pointless things and blowing your budget doesn’t have to be the outcome of every retail therapy session. Would you want to know the steps you need to take in order to achieve a session like this? Would you feel less embarrassed about this issue? If you answered yes to both of those questions then this is the article for you. Scroll down below for advice on how to implement a healthy retail therapy session according to this fashion expert.

How To Healthily Indulge In a Retail Therapy Session According To a Fashion Expert

  1. Know Your Triggers

The need for a retail therapy session may seem like it comes out of nowhere, but usually it’s a response to a trigger. Maybe you feel the need to indulge in some retail therapy after a stressful day at work or because you’ve been feeling sad lately. Maybe you find yourself reaching for your keys and heading to the mall to shop after a heated argument with your spouse or a rough day with the kids. Whatever the reason (either big or small) you need to pinpoint it, acknowledge it, and make a plan on how to deal with it.

  2. Make a Plan

Now that you know you know your triggers and you’ve acknowledged them, it’s time to make a plan. One plan could include creating a “retail therapy budget.” You could allocate a specific amount of funds each month to this budget and spend a portion of it each week. For example, if you know that Monday’s are really stressful, then you might want to plan your retail therapy sessions for that day. Then in terms of spending, you would want to spend a portion of your budget for that week (let’s just say that your budget is $200 for the entire month so you would be spending $50 every week). Putting a plan like this in place allows you to relieve stress and have a sense of freedom when it comes to indulging in a retail therapy session. It also keeps your finances balanced and gives you structure so that your retail therapy sessions don’t develop into an unhealthy habit.

  3. Make It Worthwhile

The goal of a retail therapy session is to buy things to make yourself feel better right? So make it worthwhile. Make a list each month of things that you need. The things on this list can be specific clothing items or home decor. Once your list is created, pick out the ones that align with your retail therapy budget and purchase them during your weekly retail therapy sessions. Not only will you get the positive and uplifting emotions that come with shopping, but you will also be purchasing things that you need instead of wasting money on things that you don’t need. To elevate the experience, try wearing a cute and comfortable outfit while you shop, adding a $10 coffee into your budget for a luxury feel, or taking in everything the store has to offer (envision how items will look in your closet/home, touch the products, and try on different items).

Do you have spur of the moment retail therapy sessions?

If so, then I highly encourage you to implement all three tips for at least a month. Doing this will help you create new healthy habits in your retail therapy sessions as well as keep your finances on track.
