My Transition Into Slow Living: Here’s What I Learned

The Prelude

Transitioning into sustainable styling and putting those sustainable styling practices to use daily, made me feel good and challenged me to want to live a more meaningful life. So little by little I started to consume more content that helped me make sustainable food, fashion, and finance choices. Then eventually I stumbled upon a new way of life…slow living. After doing some research of what a slow living lifestyle looked like, I knew that it was the lifestyle for me and that it aligned with where I am currently and where I want to be in the future. So I started implementing the tips immediately and now I’m ready to share what I’ve learned. Scroll down below to see my progress.

My Transition Into Slow Living: Here’s What I Learned

I’ve been rushing through life

Whether it was rushing to my next destination or rushing to check off the next task on my list… I was always in a hurry. If I’m being honest, I really don’t know what I was in a hurry for. I always make sure to give myself ample amount of time to get to my destination and I own my own business so there’s really no need to rush so quickly to get tasks done. It wasn’t until I started living slowly that I was finally able to realize just how much I rushed through life (and I was so ashamed once it finally clicked). Once I finally came to grips with how I was living, I decided to look at life through a different lens. We all have an appointed time to leave this world and in most cases we don’t know when that appointed time will be. So it’s important to savor every moment, take in all that life has to offer, and experience as much as we can while we still have breath in us. There’s no need to rush to the grave.

I’m more productive when I work at a slow and steady pace

I like producing quality work so I’ve known for quite some time that I thrive when I work at a slow and steady pace. This is one of the many reasons why I opted out of the hustle culture and 9-5 lifestyle (I just can’t get with low quality work and fast paced working environments). Transitioning into slow living reaffirmed this for me and it has been a blessing for both my mental and physical health. As a matter of fact, ever since I’ve had the chance to slow down and work at a steady pace, I’ve been feeling much happier (I’m smiling more, I have more peace in my life, and I don’t feel as anxious). Plus I’m experiencing more fulfillment, I’ve gotten way more work completed (without feeling tired and burnt out), and for the first time ever I feel like I’m finally living.

Slow living makes life so much more enjoyable

When you’re living a fast life a lot of negative traits come with that way of living. You’re much more impatient, in most cases you become ungrateful, and you indulge in a lot of unhealthy habits (unhealthy meals & snacks and spending a lot more money either to fill certain voids, buy back time, or satisfy your need for instant gratification). Slow living is the opposite of all of those traits. Through living slowly, I’ve been able to make healthier meals and beverages (which has helped me with weight loss), practice gratitude daily, and regain my patience little by little (the world destroyed all I had y’all!). Additionally, by being mindful with each of my decisions, I’ve been able to keep my stress under control, improve my finances, and upgrade my quality of life which in turn has made life so much more enjoyable for me.

I learned new hobbies

Every now and then I get asked what my hobbies are and this question would always make me feel uneasy because I didn’t have any. Since I now have time explore and learn more about myself I’ve discovered quite a few hobbies that I enjoy. I enjoy cooking, drink making, and interior design. I’ve recently taken a liking to audiobooks (I’ve always been a paperback kind of girl) and homesteading as well.

Slow living is the best

The final thing that I’ve learned is that slow living is the best (at least for me!). I haven’t been on this journey for long, but so far it has brought nothing but positivity to my life. Not only has it given me the opportunity to see the world through a different lens, but it has also given me the opportunity to get to know myself and God on a much deeper level. I’m so blessed to have found out about it because it has changed my life for the better. Maybe if God see’s fit I’ll instill this lifestyle into my children one day.
