The Virtual Fashion Letter: How Do You Make Long Skirts Cute?

This is the first/official Virtual Fashion Letter and I am quite excited to answer this question because I LOVE skirts! Since this is the very first Virtual Fashion Letter lets back up a little bit so you can figure out what it is and how to get involved. The Virtual Fashion Letter is based on questions that people have sent me and/or interesting questions that I’ve come across while researching. I typically like to feature the Virtual Fashion Letter after I have completed a series of articles. This allows me to get through the series without interruption and it also gives those who have questions time to get their questions in. If you have a fashion question that you would like answered please direct message me on Instagram or send an email to styledbybreyana@gmail.com. Now that you have a full understanding of how the process works…I present to you today’s Virtual Fashion Letter “How Do You Make Long Skirts Cute?”

How Do You Make Long Skirts Cute?

Ah skirts! At one point I grew up not liking them. I come from a background where majority of the women on my dad’s side of the family wear skirts for every occasion, in every season, and all day long. This is what I feel contributed to my dislike for skirts as a child (the main reason being I didn’t want to be trapped in the routine of wearing a skirt everyday and luckily I wasn’t thanks to my mom). However now, I love skirts and cannot get enough of them. Because of what I seen and went through, I know how hard it can be to style and get used to wearing a longer skirt. Heck, for a period of time I thought it was dang near impossible to attractively style a longer skirt, but knowing what I know now…I couldn’t be more incorrect. So I am super excited to share the things that I’ve learned along the way so that you don’t fall into the same fixed mindset that I fell into. Lets get into it!

Rule #1: Make sure to select bold colors, fabrics, and patterns that you like.

Neutrals will forever hold a special place in my heart and having a few neutrals in your skirt collection is essential. Although, if I had to give a percentage, I would say that 10% of your closet should consist of neutral, solid colored skirts and 90% should have texture, print, and/or bold colors. Why? Because the greatest outfits (especially ones that include long skirts) have texture, print, and/or color. These elements bring excitement and awe to the outfit making it more attractive, trendy, and mesmerizing. Sure you could achieve the same outcome with neutral colors…but the outfit hits differently when you pull out bright colors and/or fun and unique print. 9/10 times people will lock eyes on you and your outfit first, before they lock eyes on the person who’s wearing neutral colors from head to toe.

Rule #2: Make sure the skirt fits your style.

One of the main reasons I didn’t like skirts as a child was because I didn’t see any that fit my style or catered to my taste. I always saw those oddly fitted but loose blue jean skirts growing up so I thought that was the end all be all for me. Now that I know I am not limited to just those (thank the Lord!) I can choose between a variety of different skirts. In terms of taste, I know that I am a maxi and vinyl type of girl when it comes to skirts that are longer in length. So those are the styles I primarily focus on when shopping. Before buying anything it is important to know what type of style you like. If you have already made a purchase or have bought a variety of items, do a quick evaluation to make sure it aligns with your style. You can get an idea of what your style is by doing the following: take a few minutes to think about what styles catch your attention, pay attention to the colors that you like or lean towards the most, and look at what you have the most of in your closet.

Rule #3: Bring your skirt to life by dressing the rest of your outfit up.

When I think back on those times in my childhood where I would always see those horrible blue jean skirts, I realize that they were “horrible” to me because they were never styled in a fashionable way. I believe that if I was exposed to a more stylish way of wearing them, I probably would’ve have jumped on the long jean skirt train myself or at least given them a better reputation. This brings me to rule number three…bring your skirt to life by dressing the rest of your outfit up. When you pair your long skirt with the right colors, fabrics, designs, and accessories you can transform it into something completely different.

Here, let me give you some suggestions. Some really cute options you can use to jazz up your long skirt are: tennis shoes, flats, sandals, heels, and even boots. Tennis shoes are great for sporty, causal, and urban vibes. It’s great to create this look when you are running errands for the day and it’s also a great concept for a photo shoot (bonus tip: make sure that the tennis shoes you select flow well with the rest of the outfit). Flats, sandals, and heels are great for casual and classy vibes. These types of shoes plus your long skirt are great for when you are attending functions or meeting up with friends. Finally, let’s discuss long skirts with boots. This type of style is more for those who aren’t afraid to step out of their comfort zone and enjoy creating premium fashion looks. This style is super classy, super feminine, and can be very artistic when executed properly. I recommend wearing this type of style to social events (ex: brunch) or a fashion/art related event.

If the style tips that I just mentioned to you sound a bit intimidating, challenging, or hard to implement on your own, that’s okay I have two recommendations that I think will help. The first recommendation is using the Google search engine as a guide. Once you figure out your sense of style, you can start googling outfit inspiration (it’s as simple as typing in “long skirt style inspiration” in the Google search engine). Then as you get more comfortable, you can narrow down your search as needed (ex: long blue jean skirt style inspiration). My second recommendation is hiring a professional fashion stylist if you want more personalized advice or you need someone to help you get started.

Thank you for writing me this question and I hope that I was able to help you out in more ways than one. Remember to always pick styles and pieces that make you feel comfortable and confident, because at the end of the day that’s what having great style is all about. Lastly, if you need a starter piece for your long skirt collection check out our “Bella Rose Pink Vinyl Skirt” (available in regular and plus sizes).
